POPPY SEEDS BENEFITS SIDE EFFECTS AND THEIR USES

INTRODUCTION:

Poppy seeds are small, oil-rich seeds obtained from the opium poppy plant (Papaver somniferum), a species that has been cultivated for thousands of years for its culinary, medicinal, and ornamental value. These tiny, kidney-shaped seeds come in a variety of colors—typically blue-gray or white—depending on their origin and type.Despite being derived from the same plant used to produce opiates, poppy seeds themselves contain negligible amounts of narcotic compounds and are widely regarded as safe for consumption. They are prized in many world cuisines for their nutty flavor, crunchy texture, and versatility.

HEALTH BENEFITS:

Aids sleep:

Traditionally used as a sleep aid, poppy seeds contain compounds that may have mild sedative effects. Their rich magnesium content can also help promote relaxation.

Supports fertility:

Some studies have shown that a special X-ray test using a poppy seed oil-based liquid can improve the chances of pregnancy in women with fertility issues.

Soothes skin:

Poppy seed oil is used topically to moisturize and soothe skin conditions like eczema, dryness, and inflammation. Its healing properties may also help fade scars.

Enhances heart health:

By helping to lower “bad” LDL cholesterol and regulate blood pressure, the fatty acids and fiber in poppy seeds can contribute to better cardiovascular health.

Diagnoses vesicoenteric fistula:

The “poppy seed test” is sometimes used to diagnose this rare medical condition by having a patient ingest poppy seeds and checking for them in the urine.

SIDE EFFECTS:

False-positive drug tests:

Eating food with poppy seeds can result in a false-positive result for opiates in a drug test, as trace amounts of morphine and codeine can sometimes remain on the seeds during processing.

Unwashed seeds:

Unwashed poppy seeds, which may contain higher levels of opioid compounds, are considered a health risk and should only be consumed under medical supervision. It is important to buy food-grade, washed seeds from reputable retailers.

Allergies:

Although uncommon, some people may have an allergic reaction to poppy seeds, with symptoms such as vomiting, hives, or swelling of the mouth.

Excessive consumption:

Consuming very large amounts of poppy seeds can potentially cause bowel blockage or other adverse effects.

HOW TO USE :

Mix 1 tsp poppy seed paste with warm milk and a little honey before bed.

Traditionally used as a natural sleep aid.

For Pain Relief (External Use)

Make a paste of soaked poppy seeds and apply on forehead for headache or on joints for mild pain (used in Ayurveda).
