Introduction of Horsetail (Equisetum spp.)

Horsetail, scientifically known as Equisetum, is a genus of vascular plants that belong to the family Equisetaceae. These ancient, non-flowering plants are often recognized by their jointed stems and brush-like appearance, which resembles a horse’s tail—hence the common name.Horsetails are among the oldest living plant genera, with fossil records dating back over 100 million years to the Paleozoic era. They thrive in moist environments, such as riverbanks, marshes, and wet meadows, and are found in temperate regions across the world.

SIDE EFFECTS

Like most other herbal supplements, horsetail has not been approved by the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), and people who are pregnant and breastfeeding should avoid it.

While research in rats suggests that it’s not toxic, human studies are needed

Horsetail may cause drug-herb interactions when consumed alongside antiretroviral drugs prescribed for HIV treatment.

In people with kidney disease, horsetail may increase potassium to unsafe levels. People with kidney disease generally should not use horsetail or other herbal supplements.

Additionally, the plant contains, so you should avoid it if you have a nicotine allergy or want to quit smoking

What’s more, in one case, a 56-year-old woman experienced pancreatitis — inflammation of the pancreas — as a result of drinking horsetail tea. Her symptoms ceased when she stopped drinking the tea

Lastly, horsetail has a reported thiaminase activity. Thiaminase is an enzyme that breaks down thiamine, or vitamin B1.
